Personal experience has a way of hitting us in many ways. Age and fertility are not the best of partners. Age can be very hostile in some instances particularly when it comes to reproduction and this has also made “time” very unfriendly. Unfortunately, many of us do not appreciate this fact. Age plays a major role in fertility, but it isn’t the only factor that affects fertility.
Fertility! The power of reproduction; it can be defined as the ability to conceive and give birth to offspring. The capacity to do this is largely dictated by age, especially the age of the woman, fertility peaks in women between late teen and late twenties. Capacity to reproduce starts to fall from when a woman clocks 30 years and there is further steep decline after the age of 35 years. such that the ability of a woman to have a baby with her eggs is almost impossible after the age of 44 years. Men should not assume that they are exempted from this terrible effect of age because many studies have shown that semen quality peaks between the age of 30 to 35 years. Unfortunately, this is the period in our lives that other things like our career and other aspirations get the best of us. It is this period in our lives that we least discuss fertility and the only few discussions about fertility in this time is on its prevention. Maybe it is this period nature designs for reproduction, egg and sperm quality peak and it is the man and the woman still have sufficient energy for the means
Normal fertility would require the production of enough healthy sperms by the male and good quality eggs by the female, uninterrupted passage of the seminal fluid through the open ducts from the male testes to the female fallopian tube where it is expected to penetrate the egg and the implantation of the fertilize eggs in the lining of the uterus. A deviation from normal would result in infertility. Change is constant and fertility is no stranger to change. Fertility changes with age. Following the onset of puberty, both male and female become fertile in their teens. For females, the reproductive years are launched by ovulation and menstruation and it is a countdown clock from there. It is common knowledge that after menopause, women were unable to get pregnant at all but thank God for advancement in science, it is possible for a woman to conceive after menopause through an Assisted Reproductive Technology by receiving eggs from a kind hearted young woman. However, it is not a blank cheque apart from limiting our choices, age can still make having a baby very unsafe.
